Japanese antique yatate with skakudo and silver lid

A beautiful yatate with a lid of carved Japanese shakudo accented with inlaid silver and gold. The deck portion of the sumitsubo (ink basin) is all silver, even under the lid.

Shakudo is a unique Japanese alloy made from gold and copper (generally around 4% gold). Shakudo's stellar trait, particularly in antique shakudo, is that by design its patina will change to a deep blue / purple with time.

The sumitsubo is a bit loose, although it is not actually separated from the stem and will not come off. There are no visible cracks, just a separation of the solder that originally kept the ink basin tight.
